The eight-glasses rule is a sentence someone deleted

The 1945 document everyone blames for this rule got it right. The slogan is what is left after you delete three sentences from a four-sentence paragraph.

Eight glasses a day. Coffee doesn’t count. If you’re thirsty it’s already too late. Check your urine.

Every part of that is either wrong or unsupported, and the interesting thing is how we know — because the paragraph the rule supposedly comes from says so itself.

The original text

In August 1945 the US National Research Council’s Food and Nutrition Board published its Recommended Dietary Allowances. The entire section on water reads:

“Water. A suitable allowance of water for adults is 2.5 liters daily in most instances. An ordinary standard for diverse persons is one milliliter for each calorie of food. Most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods. At work or in hot weather requirements may reach 5 to 13 liters daily. Water should be allowed ad libitum, since sensations of thirst usually serve as adequate guides to intake except for infants and sick persons.”

Four sentences. The first gives a total-water figure. The third says most of it comes from food. The fourth endorses thirst as the guide. The rule that survived kept the number, converted it to glasses of drinking water, and discarded everything else.

What the official guidance actually says

The current figures come from the Institute of Medicine’s 2004 Dietary Reference Intakes: 3.7 litres a day for young men and 2.7 for women. Those numbers get quoted constantly. What gets dropped is the sentence immediately following them — that total water intake “includes drinking water, water in other beverages, and water (moisture) in food.”

In American survey data, beverages supply about 81 per cent of total water and food about 19 per cent. And the figure is an adequate intake: a description of what healthy people already consume, not a target anyone must hit. The panel set no upper limit.

Here is the part that should end the conversation. According to national survey data, American adults already take in a mean of 3.46 litres (men) and 2.75 litres (women) of total water per day. That is at or above the official figures. Plain water is only about 30 per cent of it.

Nobody is following the eight-glasses rule, and the population is fine.

Coffee counts

The claim that caffeinated drinks dehydrate you has been tested directly. A counterbalanced crossover study of 50 habitual coffee drinkers compared three days of coffee against three days of an equal volume of water. Total body water: 51.5 kg on coffee, 51.4 kg on water. Twenty-four-hour urine volume: 2,409 mL versus 2,428 mL. Urine osmolality, specific gravity, serum osmolality, plasma sodium — no significant differences.

A review of the caffeine and fluid-balance literature found the diuretic effect is dose-dependent and largely abolished by habituation: no diuresis at doses up to around 300 mg in habitual drinkers. The Institute of Medicine itself states that caffeinated beverages “contribute to total water intake.”

Thirst is not a late warning

The physiologist Heinz Valtin reviewed the evidence for the eight-glasses rule in a 2002 paper and reported finding no scientific studies supporting it. His argument on thirst is straightforward physiology: thirst is triggered by a rise in blood concentration of under two per cent, while clinical dehydration is generally reckoned from around five. Thirst fires well before there is a problem, not after.

That is also the position of the consensus statement covering the one group where getting this wrong actually kills people. The Third International Exercise-Associated Hyponatremia Consensus recommends that athletes “drink palatable fluids when thirsty,” and states that drinking to thirst will in most cases prevent both dangerous over-dilution and performance loss.

You can drink too much

This is the part the rule gets dangerously backwards. Researchers took blood from runners finishing the Boston Marathon. Among 488 usable samples, 13 per cent were hyponatraemic — blood sodium diluted below the normal range — and 0.6 per cent critically so. The dominant risk factor was not heat or race time alone but weight gain during the race, odds ratio 4.2. Weight gain during a marathon means one thing: drinking more than you lost.

The consensus statement records at least 14 athlete deaths from over-drinking since 1981, including three high-school American football players between 2008 and 2014.

The urine chart is a blunt instrument

Urine colour does track hydration — but at a scale most people misunderstand. A pooled analysis of 238 adults with complete 24-hour urine collections found that shifting colour by two shades on the standard eight-point chart required a change in intake of about 1,110 mL per day. The chart registers litre-scale swings. It does not detect the mild deficits the posters imply.

What about skin, weight and focus?

The honest answers are thinner than you would guess.

Skin: the only systematic review of the question found six eligible studies and described the evidence as “weak in terms of quantity and methodological quality,” with a slight effect concentrated in people who had been drinking little, and an unknown mechanism.

Weight: there is one good positive trial. Forty-eight adults aged 55 to 75 on a reduced-calorie diet who drank 500 mL before each meal lost about 2 kg more over 12 weeks. Note what that is: a pre-meal timing effect in dieting older adults, not a case for total daily volume.

Cognition: a meta-analysis of 33 studies found dehydration of around 2 per cent of body mass impaired cognition with a pooled effect of −0.21 — small, and driven by attention and motor coordination, with reaction time, memory and information processing unaffected. Those studies induced dehydration, usually through heat or exercise. None of it shows that a normally hydrated person gains anything from more water.

A 2024 systematic review found that in the whole history of the question, only 18 randomised trials have ever tested changing daily water intake. Ten reported at least one positive result; eight reported negative ones. The clearest signals were kidney-stone prevention and weight loss — both in specific patient groups.

Where this leaves you

Drink when you are thirsty. Coffee and tea count. Food counts. If your urine is consistently dark, drink more; if you are exercising hard in heat, drink more; if you are older, pregnant, unwell or on medication that affects fluid balance, ask a doctor rather than a poster.

The eighty-year error here was not scientific. It was editorial. Three sentences got cut, and the survivor became advice.
